3. Greens For Refugees
First meeting will be 18 October from 11 am to 1 pm in the upstairs room at
the State Office.
This is a new campaign group formed to bring together Greens Victoria members
who want to be more active in their support for refugees and asylum seekers.
We hope that our group will both support the wider refugee movement and help
to publicise the Greens involvement in this issue. At this stage we are hoping
to form a campaign group rather than a policy group but if there is a keen
interest in exploring Greens refugee policy we can do both.
For those people who haven't been to the Office before, please go to the
stairs behind the shop and meet us on the second floor. We will need to work
out our own priorities and then establish Terms of Reference to be taken to
State Council for ratification. If you can't make it to the meeting but want
to be involved, we will be setting up an email group which will be advertised
in the ebulletin.

To fit in with these cycles, as previously announced, we will be holding

Saturday 29 NOVEMBER 1:30 - 5.00pm + Sunday 30 OCTOBER 9:30 - 1.00pm. With a fun function on the evening of Saturday 29th.
VENUES t.b.d..
The last weekend for October has been chosen to allow branches time to consider all policies, when the last are only going out now..
There is also the possibility of the November weekend being, in part, a Special State Conference on Policy. This would allow opportunity to pass specific State Policy changes which require attention (only those regarded as urgent, eg. Wind Farm changes, would be being considered). Due notice will be given of this.
Feedback: In order to allow proper consideration and amalgamation of responses, only responses and concerns returned to James Kilby in writing (policy@vic.greens.org.au) will be considered at these workshops - both individual and branch comments.
This is not a mechanism to stifle comment or debate, but simply to assist in allowing due notice of alternatives, and to avoid the issue which occasionally arose at the State Policy Conference of major concerns being raised at the last minute without notice (and which can lead to ill-considered changes). Remember that this is also part of a National review, so our drafts will then be reconsidered with other states' responses.
So, get your responses in please.
Any questions or responses, feed them back to me. If you have not received a copy of the documents please contact James at policy@vic.greens.org.au
(these are in "long-hand" .doc format for ease.)
Cheers, James Kilby, Victorian Policy Coordinator.

7. Otway Forests Campaign Update
Greens Members Catherine Jones and Stephen Chenry, were two among five Greens Activists (Selena Reynolds, Adrian Whitehead, Iain Lygo) who took part in a protest at Halls Ridge Protests to protect significant rain forests in the heart land of the Otways. The initial protest included three non-green locals.
Ultimately the protest was successful in protecting an area that had been supposedly protected by the ALP in negotiation with forests activists.
However, Stephen and Catherine were subject to four charges each in relation to the incident. The case went to Geelong Magistrates Court on the 6th and 7th of October.
Catherine and Stephen were able to beat three of the four charges, however received fines and court costs totaling $7350 between them.
These are the latest fines and convictions the pair have received after a period equal to a decade of defending our forests.
Stephen and Catherine would love your support for the forests, please feel free to ring them on Catherine 5251 2304 and Stephen 5263 3443.
The Forest group is going to investigate ways Greens members might contribute to the costs of our front line activists. People interested should contact myself Adrian Whitehead Convenor, Forest Group (jock@labyrinth.net.au).
A big THANK YOU to Tony Lewis for all his legal advice in the case.
People interested in the Otway Forests should come to the Eco Weekend at Rileys Ridge on the Saturday and Sunday the 8th and 9th of November. Contact Sally-Anne Brown otwaygreens@iprimus.com.au
