Greens in Local Government
There are 14 Victorian Green Councillors
Cr Andrea Sharam
Moreland City Council
In the 1990's Andrea Sharam was a part of the successful campaign that saved the Upfield railway line. In 1994, she was a Greens candidate for the by-election seat of Coburg and receieved 21% of the vote.
Andrea has helped fund Moreland’s first public netball court and women’s-only swimming at Fawkner Leisure Centre. In November 2004, she was elected to represent the City of Moreland's North East Ward.
Andrea has a Graduate Diploma in urban planning and policy, and BA in Fine Art. She has organised many art events/exhibitions.
She was president of the Energy Action Group for 7 years, has presented "City Limits" a show about urban planning on 3CR for ten years and has a PhD on the impact of competition on essential services.
She has worked as an AMES Home tutor, as a home-helper for Brunswick Council, for both state and Commonwealth public services, as well as having held service, cleaning and factory jobs. She also has a background in community legal education/law reform and as a researcher.
On Council, Andrea has also worked for an extension of the local government franchise for permanent residents and Temporary Protection for Visa holders, and on a New Family Violence Strategy focussed on prevention. This program had particular emphasis on addressing family violence as a work place issue.
Currently, Cr Andrea Sharam is in the Jewell station planting group and a member of the Council's Urban Planning Committee. She is working with the Fawkner Transport Group for new service extensions, for example, night and Sunday services have just commenced. Andrea is a community representative on the Brunswick Council’s Rapid Transit Link and anti-Western Bypass (Citylink) campaigns; and a member of Alternatives to Freeways Now!
Cr Andrea Sharam believes the most important thing yet to be done is the retention of a 10h area of parkland at Edgar’s Creek in North Coburg. This is owned by VicRoads and the state government intends to sell the land for development
