Greens in Local Government
Cr David Jones
David is Bendigo's 2007-2008 Mayor.
David Jones joined The Greens in 1995, and was a founding member of Bendigo Greens, and its first Convenor. David attended La Trobe University Bendigo and became a teacher, teaching history, politics, economics and business management at Bendigo Senior Secondary College for five years prior to lecturing in international banking and finance in Shanghai, China. He has also held positions within the Federal Public Service with Centrelink and Austudy.
David Jones was the co-founder of the Sunny Sedgewick Music Festival, a former board member of the Eaglehawk Training Station and has been involved in local soccer and cricket. He has lived, worked and been involved in community life in Greater Bendigo for over 30 years and is a father of two children.
David has been on the Victorian Greens State Executive and State Council, as well as State Co-Secretary. He has been a Greens candidate for Federal Parliament twice, for the seats of Bendigo and Mallee. He has also run for local government twice, using 'low-budget, high-commitment campaigns', and after doorknocking the entire Kangaroo Flat Ward, a total of about 4500 homes, he was elected in November 2005. He was subsequently elected Mayor of Bendigo in 2006.
“At a local level I feel that being a Green is just right. Being elected at the same time as (Cr) Julie (Rivendell) has been a great benefit, due to her understanding and experience of large organisations. I think it is really important we learn how to work with and change these organisations, so they better reflect the growing awareness of the importance of our environment and community consultation.”
David is satisfied that he and Cr
Rivendell have been able to help make climate change, water,
sustainability and the environment really matter for the Bendigo
community. He also has a special focus on community engagement and
communication.
For the past two and a half years
David has also been a small business owner, making nesting boxes and
bird feeders from recycled materials, predominately for the nursery
industry.
David encourages all Greens to run for local government, to achieve Green goals at a local level, for their own personal and professional development and for the good for the Party. He says the Greens are leading the way at a local level, and that a lot of Greens Councillors are highly respected in local government circles.
