Candidate for Melbourne Announced

Greens Senator Bob Brown has launched Greens candidate Adam Bandt for the high-profile Federal seat of Melbourne, saying: "The seat of Melbourne will be hotly contested at this year’s election. Adam Bandt is an excellent candidate for the Greens. With his strong background in industrial law with Slater & Gordon, Adam will give the Greens a very good chance of winning a lower house seat”.

Inner city Melbourne seats are fiercely contested between the Greens and Labor. With a five to eight per cent swing from Labor to the Greens, Mr Bandt may unseat Labor’s Lindsay Tanner. At the last State election, the Greens polled 48% on a two-party preferred basis, nearly unseating State Labor Minister Bronwyn Pike.

“Industrial relations is a key issue this election. As Labor caves in under pressure from big business, now only The Greens stand for the full abolition of Work Choices, AWAs and the building commission,” said Mr Bandt.

Adam has worked as an industrial and public interest lawyer for the last decade, representing workers and their unions. He has been a partner at Slater & Gordon, a major progressive national law firm, and has Deputy Labor Leader Julia Gillard’s previous position.

Having seen Howard's workplace laws in action, and being a recognised expert in workplace law, Adam knows the importance of ripping up Work Choices and abolishing unfair individual employment agreements. He also strongly believes in halting the attack on our civil rights.
