Greens confident as Victorian election count continues

After 14 years of campaigning, the Greens will now have seats in the Victorian Parliament. This is the message from the Greens following the State Election

Greens Candidates

With the vote count continuing today, the Greens Northern Metropolitan Region candidate, Greg Barber, said the election campaign was the most exciting and inspirational the Greens have run in Victoria.

"We are very confident of two seats in the Upper House," said Greg Barber. "And in the Eastern Metropolitan and Western Metropolitan Regions, we have a real chance."

"Our vote has held up well, despite every party devoting some time in the campaign to take a swing at us," said Greg Barber. "In Southern Metropolitan, Sue Pennicuik's region, our vote went up. In the Lower House seat of Melbourne, with two thirds of the vote counted, we'll have to wait and see."

"In the Upper House, it's an absolute cliff-hanger as to whether the Government ends up with nineteen, twenty, or twenty one seats," said Greg Barber. "There's a lot at stake here and the Western Metropolitan Region is particularly significant. If the Greens don't win this seat, Labor will get control of the Upper House, thanks to the Liberals who preferenced Labor ahead of the Greens."

"The Greens have been focused on policies across this campaign, and we will continue to do this," said Greg Barber. "Action on climate change is a must. The Greens will be introducing a bill to set short term goals for greenhouse gas reductions in Victoria. Bob Brown is working on a bill that will go into the Federal Senate at the same time. Both bills will be similar to the Californian and South Australian legislation."
