Greens MLCs support Dying With Dignity

Greens MLC Colleen Hartland was one of the speakers at a Dying With Dignity rally on the steps of State Parliament on 20 June 2007.

Ms Hartland said she was very pleased that Liberal MP Ken Smith has called for a Private Members Bill on voluntary euthanasia.

All three Greens MLCs felt it was appropriate for Ms Hartland to address the rally, and are prepared to support the Bill. The Greens will look at the possibility of co-sponsoring the Bill.

MPs Maxine Morand (ALP), Ken Smith (LIB), Colleen Hartland (Green), Dr Rodney Syme, journalist Terry Lane and Neil Francis of Dying With Dignity, who addressed the rally.

Ms Hartland said, 'Dying With Dignity as a group has thought out these issues carefully, and I'm glad this debate is now happening. People who are terminally ill, in pain or have lost their dignity need to be able to control what's happening to them'.

She stressed, as did other participants in the rally, that 80% of the community supports allowing people to choose the means of ending their lives.
