Greens support decriminalisation of abortion

21-8-2007

The Greens in Victorian Parliament have indicated that they will vote in favour of decriminalising abortion, after being briefed on the legislation set to be introduced by Ms Candy Broad in Parliament this week.

"It's outrageous that a medical procedure is still in the criminal code in this day and age. It's a matter for a woman to decide," said Green MLC Colleen Hartland.

Greens MPs Sue Pennicuik
and Colleen Hartland.

"This issue crosses party lines, uniting women and men. We compliment Candy Broad for having the courage of her convictions to bring on this debate," said Ms Hartland.

"We don't want to return to an age where women's lives were put at risk by illegal abortion".
