The Greens Protest Against John Howard's Industrial Relations Laws

Victorian Greens were among more than one hundred thousand Victorians at Melbourne's workers rights rally on Wednesday June 28. The demonstration was held to demand fairer workplace laws and an end to John Howard’s discriminatory "WorkChoices” legislation.

The protest converged on the Bourke Street Mall from all the city's major streets and Greens triangles and placards stood out in the sea of colour. With the Victorian election coming up on November 25, the Greens Industrial Relations policy (PDF) has been released. Major initiatives include:

  • returning Victoria's industrial relations powers (transferred to Canberra by the Kennett government),
  • establishing a Victorian Industrial Relations Commission
  • legislating to protect minimum employment conditions
  • protecting the right to strike and union access to workers in workplaces
  • removing employers' ability to sue over industrial action.
