The Greens Win Two Seats in the Victorian Parliament
For the first time, Victorians will be represented by the Greens in State Parliament. Following today's provisional count, Greg Barber has been elected to represent the Northern Metropolitan Region and Sue Pennicuik, the Southern Metropolitan Region.

"This is a historic day for the Greens in Victoria," said Sue Pennicuik. "Greens are now represented in most state parliaments, and in Canberra."
"In Victoria, we will be a strong voice for the environment and social justice," said Sue Pennicuik. "We will work to make the Government accountable and decision making transparent."
In Western Victoria Region, the DLP looks like gaining a seat ahead of the Greens and appear to have won the final seat in the Northern Metropolitan Upper House Region. The ALP will no longer have a majority in the Upper House.
"This is Family First all over again," said Greg Barber. "Labor's preferences seem to have put right wing nutters into the Victorian Upper House. Labor voters will be very disappointed in the way the ALP bosses have directed their party's preferences."
"Steve Bracks no longer has control of the Upper House," said Greg Barber. "If the non-government parties can work together, we can have a democratic Upper House, which we haven't had in Victoria in 150 years."
With the vote so close in the Western Victoria Upper House Region, the Greens will be calling for a re-count.
"There are very few votes between the last three candidates, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens with the recount," said Greens candidate Marcus Ward. "However, it looks like the ALP could have, once again, preferenced the DLP to a win. This would be a big step backwards for politics in Victoria."
A re-count is also likely in the Eastern Metropolitan Upper House Region, where the provisional count has the Liberals beating the Greens for the last position.
