Victoria Needs Wind Power

Climate change is real and Victoria must act now to reduce greenhouse emissions. "Wind power is an important part of Victoria's response to climate change," says Louis Delacretaz, the Greens Energy policy spokesperson. "It's also important to acknowledge that the location of wind turbines can and does make an impact on local communities."

"In Victoria, we desperately need an effective plan for the state's energy system. It must identify how much wind energy is required, and involve the local community at the start of the planning process," said Louis Delacretaz. "This way, we can also avoid damaging sensitive landscapes, migrating birds, fragile ecosystems and community amenity."

"To do this we want to extend the current planning, review and appeal process by getting the applicant to talk to communities during their pre-planning stage," said Louis Delacretaz. "We want to set up a state wide review to nominate where wind turbines can be sited and where they should be prohibited. The results of the review will form part of controls added to local planning schemes."

"We also need to act to reduce energy demand and improve the energy efficiency of our homes and workplaces, if we are serious about tackling climate change in Victoria," said Louis Delacretaz.

The Victorian Greens Energy Policy will be released soon, as part of the Greens Victorian election campaign.
