Hear Lex Wotton speak on the systemic failure to implement the Recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody
· Palm Island community leader Lex Wotton will speak at the Darebin Greens meeting on Wednesday August 6
· Mulrunji Doomadgee died in the Palm Island watchhouse on November 19th 2004. Mulrunji died of massive internal bleeding after his liver was cleaved in two and his ribs fractured.
Lex participated in the community resistance on Palm Island later that month, triggered by the release of the first state enquiry into Mulunji’s killing, which, while noting that he had suffered a ruptured liver and four broken ribs, concluded that his death resulted from a “scuffle”
· A second coronial enquiry in September 2006 found that Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley had struck Mulrunji with such force that it caused the Aboriginal man to die
· Join the campaign to drop charges against Mr Wotton arising from the protests that could see him jailed for ten years
· Speaking tour organised by the Indigenous Social Justice Association – Melbourne, Contact Cheryl on 0401 806 331
· A book on Mulrunji’s death, Gone for a Song, by journalist Jeff Waters, will be on sale at the talk.
