Notice of Branch Meeting
The next meeting of the Frankston Branch of the Australian Greens will be held on Monday the 16th of June 7:30pm Frankston Life Saving Club.
What our MLC’s do in Government
At our last meeting Jim Reiher from the Victorian Greens Parliamentary Liaison Group gave a very interesting presentation on the workings of the Victorian Parliament and the activities of our three Greens MLC’s.
If anyone missed the last meeting and would like to see a repeat of Jim’s Powerpoint presentation come along to the next meeting.
Call for nominations for Local Government
The Victorian Greens State Election Committee (VECC) has advised, based on Senate results in the North West (Seaford to Frankston Central) and South West (Frankston South) wards in Frankston, the Greens would have close to a 50% chance of having a councillor elected in these two wards.
Local government is a great way to build the branch, and in turn the party, and is how other Greens parties (Germany especially) have become bigger through a grassroots method. This will be a watershed election due to both the recent council reviews and the fact that all councils will be elected at the same time: The Victorian Greens believe we will more than double the amount of councillors we currently have elected across Victoria but only if we have candidates running in all winnable wards.
If you are interested in running for council, particularly in the North West or South West wards in Frankston, or know of anyone who may be interested in running as a Greens candidate, please contact me.

Update - Land and Biodiversity at a time of Climate Change Green Paper - Frankston Forum
Georgia Garrard has acepted our invitation to join Dr. Roger Jones as our second keynote speaker. She is completing her PhD at RMIT University where she is a researcher with the "Re-imagining the Australian Suburb" project.
Georgia will speak generally about the challenges to biodiversity conservation in urban fringe areas and, in light of the Green Paper "Land and Biodiversity at a time of Climate Change", discussing some of the ways that these challenges might be addressed.
Georgia believes that in our vast country where over 75% of the population live in urban areas, urban fringe biodiversity often provides the only link between people and nature. "Today, more than 40% of our nationally-listed threatened ecological communities and 50% of our threatened species occur in urban fringe areas, however the urban fringe presents a unique set of challenges to those responsible for biodiversity management, not the least of which is the critical balancing act required to protect biodiversity in areas where there is significant pressure for urban development".
Our moderator for the evening will be Ms. Carrie Deutch from the Victoria Naturally Alliance. Carrie says "This event will be absolutely full of facts and information and we will be looking for feedback on the night, so put your thinking caps on and come prepared."
A panel comprising well known local experts will be on hand to answer questions on the evening and will be announced when the final team is confirmed.
June 3rd, 7pm at the Frankston Football Club, Cnr Plowman Place & Young St, Frankston
