A win for Tottenham residents and the Greens - Hartland
12-03-1008 Greens MLC Colleen Hartland won the unanimous support of Parliament today for widespread action and reform following the Tottenham Chlorine Fire of December 2007.
"I'd like to congratulate the residents of Tottenham, whose community spirit and courageous action during the fire has won our hearts. They banded together and helped each other, during a frightening and life threatening situation."
"This isn't only a win for the Tottenham residents, it's a win for everyone who lives close to heavy industry throughout Victoria."
"My motion called for funding in the budget for an emergency telephone alerting system for residential areas close to industrial zones, funding for thorough investigation of compliance for all industry in the Tottenham and Brooklyn Area, a review of the zoning system, with a view to increasing buffers between heavy industry and residents, making all the investigations into the fire public, and answering all the public's questions, which were posed in my report into the fire."
"I'm so happy that Parliament has decided not to make this a party political issue."
"We have achieved today more positive action than we got following the Coode Island explosion and fire, so it's a great day for the Western suburbs."
"We are finally getting recognition that no matter where you live, residents have a right to live safely in their own homes", said Colleen Hartland
