Drink Container Scheme will turn Rubbish into Community Money

11-03-2008 The Greens joined MPs from every political party on the steps of Parliament House today to support a scheme to bring in a 10c deposit for all drink containers in Victoria.

"I am planning to co-sponsor drink container deposit legislation with Independent MP Craig Ingram, so I'm very excited about today's turnout", said Colleen Hartland MLC.

"This is the best indication so far that this issue can unite the political parties. We know the public wants it, we know it's good for the environment, and now we know we can make it happen."

"A 10c deposit means community money, for community groups, environment groups, sporting groups, scouts and church groups."

"The plan is that soft drink bottles and cans, wine and other alcoholic drink bottles and milk containers will be stamped with a 10c deposit, returnable at depots."

"Local council and community groups can raise funds by running depots, or by picking up litter."

"I am also working together with Ian Cohen, Greens MP in New South Wales, so that we can introduce similar schemes in both states. This will make it easier to transition to a national scheme when the other states come on board."

"We want to change the way we view drink containers. Today they are rubbish. In the future they will be community money. 10c can change the world," said Colleen Hartland.
