Hartland to Report on "Harrowing" Tottenham Fire
17-01-2008 Greens MLC Colleen Hartland will release her own report in the first week of Parliament on the Tottenham Chlorine fire, which released toxic fumes over the inner western suburbs on 22 December 2007.
"I am in a unique position to set out the impact on the community of this event. I heard about the fire on the radio, looked out the window, saw the toxic clouds and responded immediately," said Colleen Hartland.
"The next day, I started door-knocking residents. I heard people's stories first hand, and since then, residents have been contacting me. Some of the stories I've heard are absolutely harrowing. The authorities haven't heard those stories, because they didn't door-knock. That's why they think residents could have shut their windows - they didn't know that houses were already full of fumes."
"Those stories deserve to be told, and I intend to make sure they reach Parliament at the earliest opportunity. I want to look the Government in the eye and tell them what happened in Tottenham."
"I've responded to several toxic emergency events as a community campaigner and resident, and what gets me every time is how little the Government learns from each emergency. I will be making strong recommendations."
"Residents who would like their experiences included in the report can get the survey questions from my website, www.electedgreensvictoria.com.au. Or they can contact my office on 9689 6373 and I will send a survey form to them," said Ms Hartland
Victorian Parliament will commence sitting on 5 February 2008.
