Inner West residents vote with their feet against road tunnel
19-06-2008 Residents filled the hall to overflowing, even after a last minute venue change to a larger hall, in a meeting to oppose the Eddington Report's proposed new roads and tunnels through the Inner West suburbs. The meeting was called by Greens MLC Colleen Hartland.
"I am absolutely overwhelmed and thrilled by the residents' response," said Colleen Hartland. "They came out of their homes on a cold night and filled the hall to overflowing. They sat on the floor and stood at the back, young and old together, and they behaved with the sort of respect and good humour that I've always loved about the West", said Colleen Hartland.
"We showed the route of the proposed roads on the big screen. We showed the vague Eddington maps, then we showed our own aerial photograph maps, based on the technical data in the reports, showing the likely route of the roads. One of the most frequent comments was that this was the first time people had been given good information about the proposal."
"How can people be expected to make submissions if they aren't given decent information? We're talking about great thumping roads right next to people's houses, and in some cases right through them."
"The residents asked me to put the information on my website, for download by people who couldn’t attend the meeting. They asked for a submission-writing workshop, so I've booked the Hyde Street church again for Wednesday 2 July. They asked for another meeting, to start a local campaign against the roads, so I've booked the Hyde Street church for Monday 4 August."
"Watch this space. If you gave me your contact details, I will be in touch. Give me a call if you want to join the campaign. Or check the websites, www.electedgreensvictoria.org.au and www.wrongway-goback.com.au."
I'm absolutely thrilled at what the community has asked me to do, because this means they want to campaign with me against the roads, against the tunnel and for more public transport. I don’t care who you vote for, get in touch, and we’ll work together", said Colleen Hartland
