Kororoit is a black hole for public transport
04-06-2008 "Andre Haermeyer's comment supporting the east west road tunnel from Kensington to Collingwood further highlights Labor's failure to invest in public transport for the western suburbs," said Colleen Hartland MLC.
"It appears his parting wish is
for a $10 billion tunnel that virtually no-one in Brimbank and Melton will
get to use. If only he'd been able to achieve some investment in
public transport for Brimbank and Melton in his time as local MP."
"Kororoit is a black hole for public
transport. There's no train station. There's a train line running
straight through it, but the Labor government has no plans to electrify
it."
"At the last State election, the
Greens campaigned strongly on electrifying the Bacchus Marsh line, with
a new station at Caroline Springs, and I've brought that campaign to Parliament
as their state upper house representative."
"In the Kororoit electorate, about
ten thousand people commute to inner Melbourne for work, of which 63% travel
by car. About 24,000 commute to other western and northern suburbs,
of which 94% travel by car. Give them a train and they will use it,"
said Colleen Hartland
"The by-election is a good opportunity
for residents to ask all the candidates: will you represent me, or do you
want to use my taxes to build an expensive tunnel for someone else? Why
isn't there a community health centre in my area? Why are we so badly
impacted by pokies?"
"Kororoit is neglected in state
elections because it's a 'safe seat'. I hope the by-election focuses
attention on the services needed in our area", said Colleen Hartland.
