State budget and transport

06-05-2008 Greens MLC Greg Barber said: "Every year, for the last four years the government have underestimated the growth in public transport patronage. Massively underestimated it."

"Last year the government predicted 5% growth in train patronage and got 14%.  The oil price just broke a new record but for next year they are predicting 10% growth in train patronage.  When will they learn?"

"Despite over 100 million extra trips on public transport compared to four years ago,  public transport growth is not keeping pace with the growth in car use - meaning the government's 20% of trips by public transport by 2020 target is getting no closer, with only eleven years to go."

"If the government neither predicted, planned for nor managed to cope with the recent public transport growth, they have no hope of meeting their 20%/2020 target."

"To reach it we'd expect to see billions in the budget every year for more rolling stock, new train lines and more frequent services. We'd expect to see a plan."

"Their own greenhouse targets will demand this sort of growth in public transport usage.  If they do have a plan to get us to 20% by 2020, they aren't letting on."
