Junction Ward
John Middleton
John lived in St Kilda (Junction Ward) from 1984 to 2000, and currently lives in Middle Park. He is a former director and partner of a leading consulting engineering firm and has a Diploma of Civil Engineering, (Caulfield Institute of Technology) and a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (University of Melbourne). He has been involved mainly in the design and supervision of the structural and civil engineering components of large building and industrial projects. As well as being a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia and a member of the Society for Sustainability and Environmental Engineering.

He has been involved in numerous planning issues at council and VCAT and has been a member of Save Albert Park since 1995 (Vice-President since 2000). He's also been a member of The Australian Greens Victoria since April 2001 and was Co-Convenor of Port Phillip Branch and State Councillor in 2006.

We need a new council. The current council has lost touch with the community. It is in denial about the many problems that it has created, through incompetent management and poor decision-making, and that are the subjects of ongoing (and costly) litigation and Ombudsman’s investigations. The choice is clear - either elect a new council that will be open to greater scrutiny or live with four more years of council secrecy, misinformation and contempt for the community.

The council has some environmental and social achievements to its credit (but fewer than it claims) and much more needs to be done. Climate change is our greatest and most urgent problem, but also offers enormous opportunities. Local government can achieve much in its' own right, but can also have a profound influence on other levels of government.

As a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia and former director and partner of a leading consulting engineering firm, John is a supporter of property development and urban renewal but wants to see it done in ways that are of benefit to, rather than detrimental to the amenity of, the community.

His technical and management background will be an asset in dealing with council matters, particularly those relating to planning and development, traffic and parking, waste management and financial management.

He can bring to council the benefit of years of practical experience in business and the construction industry, as well as a commitment to the environment and to open and accountable governance.
