Jill Redwood, Eastern Victoria Region

Greens Upper House Candidate for the Eastern Victoria Region in the 2006 Victorian Election

Jill RedwoodJill Redwood has lived and worked in Gippsland for over 30 years. A well-known environmentalist, Jill has spoken out for forest conservation since the mid 1980s. Jill has been a regular writer and cartoonist for the national magazines "Wild" and "Earth Garden", where her practical articles on small-scale farming and self-sufficiency have been a favourite with many readers.

After leaving an early career in biological research, Jill lived and worked near Walhalla, Maffra and then Cann River. After the 1983 fires burnt out her property, Jill bought land in Goongerah in the early 1980s where she built an environmentally low impact house where she now runs a small organic property and an eco-accommodation business.

Jill has coordinated the conservation group Environment East Gippsland; has bred and trained heavy horses for the last 18 years, and still writes and cartoons and has a passion for the natural environment and wildlife. In her local community Jill has also been a CFA member for 14 years.

"Like many people, I see there is a desperate need to bring some sanity into the world, at both local and global level. Having campaigned for an improved environment, I have learnt that, sadly, the major parties are too often - and too easily - influenced by large developers and big business. In contrast, the Greens have always been a party with social compassion, environmental understanding and political ethics".

Jill Redwood's main focus areas are:

  • practical forest and biodiversity conservation,

  • ensuring water resources are correctly managed,

  • the inappropriate influence of large businesses on government decisions at the expense of the community,

  • employment based on the new economy - not relying on the old dirty extractive industries,

  • the real threat of climate change

  • maintaining the character of Gippsland by controlling unsuitable developments and sensitively managing the growth areas.
